Even though there were 5 teams that competed, having a ‘National’ homeschool event for football is a huge breakthrough. For a little perspective, in 1992, when the national homeschool basketball tournament started in San Antonio, there were only a handful of teams that competed. This year, there are more than 340 teams that will participate in the 18th annual NCHBC in Springfield, MO. There is always a beginning.
The 1st annual event took place in Panama City Beach, FL November 19-22. Teams from Missouri, Virginia, Louisiana, and 2 from Georgia competed for the title. In the end, the Springfield Chargers from Springfield, MO took first place.
The tournament director, Hank St. Denis said in an interview, “There is probably less than 20 homeschool teams across the country. You are starting to get more and more teams organizing. A lot of states, you can’t play at the local high school so we’re starting to see a lot more teams. And there is obviously a need for it.
“I watched it (Homeschool football) grow and reached a point where I thought.. okay well now is a good time, let’s see if we can put something together in terms of a national tournament.”
The football facilities they use are also very good. “There are 2 fields we used at Frand Brown Park... and less than 5 minutes from the Christian retreat location everyone stayed at. It aloud us to have 2 games going on at one time; so it makes for a good atmosphere.”
“I think we will have an even better turnout next year. We had over 600 fans and spectators at the games... including cheerleaders. We are planning for 800-1,000 for the 2009 football tournament.” When asked if he could handle all 20 teams Hank said.. “Absolutely.”
